Portugal: the live status of the Portuguese electricity grid

Portugal's grid, operated by REN, gets the large majority of its generation from wind, hydro and solar, with gas providing flexible backup and Portugal often running on 100% renewable generation for extended stretches. It trades closely with Spain as part of the Iberian market (MIBEL). It is not physically interconnected to Great Britain, so it is included here for comparison rather than as one of GB's own interconnector partners. Demand, generation, day-ahead price and generation mix below are live from the ENTSO-E Transparency Platform.

Portugal frequently runs on very high renewable shares - wind, hydro and solar together often cover the large majority of demand.

      About the Portuguese grid

Redes Energéticas Nacionais (REN) operates Portugal's transmission grid, trading closely with Spain as part of the joint Iberian electricity market (MIBEL) inside the Continental Europe synchronous area. Wind, hydro and a fast-growing solar fleet together supply the large majority of Portugal's generation in a typical year, with gas providing flexible backup for periods of low wind and hydro output.

Portugal has no direct electrical interconnector with Great Britain - its main external links run through Spain. It is included on this site purely for cross-country comparison via the Comparisons page, not because of any GB grid relationship.

      Records & context

      • All-time peak demand10,168MW (provisional) - 6 January 2026, 7.45pm, the first time above 10GW
      • Peak renewable output10,845MW - 27 January 2025
      • Record annual consumption53.1TWh in 2025
      • Renewable share of consumptionRecord ~71% in 2024 (68% in 2025), after a drought dip to ~49% in 2022
      • Solar PV capacity~6.95GW by end of 2025

Approximate renewable share of Portuguese electricity consumption by year - the 2022 dip shows how exposed hydro-heavy grids are to drought years.

      Data sources for Portugal

The Elexon Insights Solution, NESO Data Portal and Carbon Intensity API that power the Great Britain pages are GB-specific and do not cover Portugal, so this page draws on a different source instead:

      • ENTSO-E Transparency Platform - the pan-European grid data hub, required by EU regulation for every connected transmission system operator to publish to. Powers demand, generation, day-ahead price, the generation mix, the 24-hour mix chart and the History section above, all via Portugal's own bidding zone. Requires the site operator's own free API token, obtained through a short registration process - shows "not enough recorded history yet" rather than a placeholder figure if one is not set or ingestion has not run yet.

Two figures are not shown on this page at all: ENTSO-E does not publish emissions intensity (g/kWh), and its generation-per-type data does not include cross-border physical flow, so rather than show a permanently illustrative placeholder for either, they are left out until a real source exists. See the sitewide data sources page for how this compares to the other pages.
